Born 19 February 1976 in Cross River State, Nigeria. Madam Florence Ita Giwa is a renowned business woman, politician and fashion icon.
Mama Bakassi, as she is fondly called is a qualified nurse, a profession which many do not know she practiced long before venturing into politics.
Madam Florence attended the Kilburn Polytechnic in London, United Kingdom, thereafter becoming a nurse and representative of Beecham pharmaceutical company, before moving to Standal pharmaceuticals as a Lagos State representative .
She married Mr Dele Giwa, of blessed memory in a marriage that lasted 10 months and produced a daughter, Koko Giwa.
Dele Giwa until his passing in 1986 is known for being the founding editor of Newswatch magazine.
Ita Giwa started her political journey as the NRC chairman, Delta State before being elected as a member of the House of Representatives from 1992-1993.
Between 1994 and 1995, Florence Ita Giwa became a member of the committee for devolution of power constituent assembly, where she became involved in the situation of Bakassi and earned the name “Mama Bakassi”.
In April 1999, Ita Giwa was elected a Senator for the Cross River South Constituency and appointed as a member of the committee on Rules and Procedures, Environment, Foreign Affairs, Women ,Niger Delta and Drug Narcotics.
In 2003, Ita Giwa joined the PDP to become president Olusegun Obasanjo’s special adviser on National Assembly Matters.
Ita Giwa is a strong supporter of the fight against human tr@ff!ck!ng and s£& $/avery .
She has received the Sun Life Time Award and also an Officer of the Order of the Niger OON.
